Document Summary
Stages of memory: stm: memory that can be held for 10-20 seconds, working memory: second stage of stm, attention and conscious effort is brought onto the material. Ltm: memory stage that has a very large capacity and the capability to store that information relatively permanent: maintenance rehearsal: rehearsal used to maintain or save information, elaborative rehearsal: when meaning is added to help remember. Proactive interference: situation in which previously learned information hinders recall of information learned more recently. Retroactive interference: situation in which information learned more recently hinders the recall of information learned previously. Explicit memory: memories we are consciously aware of, such as facts or personal events sematic or episodic memory. Implicit memory: unconsciously aware; but influences priming and procedural. Tip of the tongue (tot) phenomena: almost but not quite remembering. This is used to investigate the nature of sematic memory. Priming: unconscious memory processing in which prior exposure to stimulus items may aid to subsequent learning.
