Diferences between these civilisaions are primordial, encompass the most basic idenity markers like language and religion. Conlict that is coming is west vs. the rest because the west is trying to impose liberal ideals and maintain economic dominance. Real conlict will be at the west/confucian/islamic axis. Confucians and islam trying to get more weapons, and the west trying to stop that. Islam is seen as a major threat to the west; hunington says islam has bloody borders. Others have very culturally rooted arguments, like benjamin barber. Responses/criiques: david beethem: religions are not immutable or monolithic, they can be interpreted diferently or revisioned, stepham: religions are muli-vocal; they can be used in diferent ways for either democraic or authoritarian ends. Asian values: confucian values create basis for authoritarianism through emphasis on stability and community. Amartya sen and kim dae jung argue against this using diferent aspects of confucianism that go with democracy.
