First believers were members of the prophets family and ln. Political and military warfare with opponents, capturing mecca in 630. Gradual expansion of control over the arabian peninsula. Was very successful in bringing what is essentially saudi arabia and the surrounding areas into the muslim community in his lifetime. Was successful because it was built off the already existing framework of monotheism in the middle east. Did not denounce other prophets, just claimed muhammad was the final prophet (muhammad as the seal of the prophet) Islam was at the time of it"s conception a religion of great social reform. Emphasis on justice, community (umma), spiritual equality of believers, social responsibility.
