Lecture 1 colonization: origins of the state. Colonization of latin america starts with columbus when he sails and landfall in salvador. (present day, bahamas). He called indigenous people indians thinking he met the first indians from india. Columbus would write so tractable, so peaceful are these people i swear to your majesties there is not in the world a better nation they should be made to work, sow, and do all that is necessary . Columbus to the king and queen of spain, 1492. Through the combination of diseases brought by europeans, and the conditions of slavery, many indigenous people died. It definitely helped to institute a system of slavery based on extreme violence, that would lead to genocide. Columbus was in fact the first to do that but not the only one by any means. On the pre-columbian central america map: we can see the diversity interns of civilizations.
