Machiavelli advised the rulers of florence, who were defeated by pope julius. Exiled, machiavelli tried to ingratiate himself to the new rulers, the medici family. Wrote a handbook on how to govern: the prince (advise the medici family how to rule in florence in hopes that he would gain a prestigious position)
