Most democracies in the post-world war ii era have been in some sort of alliance with one another, direct or indirect, preventing war. Hypothesis one: more democratic both members of a state are, the less likely it is that militarized disputes break out, less likely that it will escalate operates independently of other dyadic attributes (alliances, economic growth, etc. ) Hypothesis two (normative): the more deeply rooted in democratic norms, the less likely disputes will break out. Hypothesis three (structural): higher the political constraints on states, the lower the likelihood of disputes. Spatial-temporal domain contiguity and major power involvements two important factors for the likelihood for war. Correlates of war, 1816-1976, threats to use of military forces, actual use for force.
