Global south isn"t completely accurate for which countries belong in. Africa has more states (52) than any other continent. Most african, asian, middle eastern states were colonies of european powers at one point or another. Inter-state wars in african and latin america have been relatively rare. Civil wars have been much more common in africa, asia, middle east. This calls into question the classic realism balancing, bandwagon: argues that realism needs to be updated. Germany, france, uk, italy, belgium, holland, portugal, spain, usa, were present. Borders were drawn arbitrarily, or sometimes to deliberately divide: separated groups which may be able to resist european, divide and rule colonizers. Most present-day african borders date back to then. British forces assisted rebels in bringing down ottoman empire. Sykes-picot agreement (1916) between britain and france secretly carved up middle east. Countries that arose out of the territory covered by the agreement have become conflict zones: syria, lebanon, israel/palestine, and iraq.
