PLNT 460 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Impatiens, Impatiens Capensis, Phenology
Document Summary
Descriptive studies- exploratory, looks for patterns for future research. Comparative studies or natural experiments- takes advantage of the variability in natu- ral systems to test hypotheses. Manipulative or controlled experiments- a researcher controls variables. Measurable at the individual level, without reference to the environment. Attributes are taken at a specific place and time. Different traits may occur along environmental gradients or through time. Attributes are usually assessed to find an average for a population. Height, colour, leaf shape/length/colour/type, flower colour/pattern/size/type, sex, num- ber of seeds produced, amount of nitrogen fixed etc. Genetically fixed ranges of traits that have evolved over time. Impatiens capensis (jewelweed) found at high density in moist conditions in deciduous forests or clearings. Elongated in low light conditions (this trait is suppressed in normal light conditions)
