Signaling is fast because it is through ion channels. Why one neuron fires differently than another is because it is different ions channels. Lipid is impermeable to ions so they only get through the ion channels. Every cell in the body has ion channels and uses them for signaling. Most of therapeutics to treat the central nervous system target ion channels. In the pore where ions pass, there are amino acid residues that act as a selectivity filter to allow only selected ions to go through. Different classes: ligand gated: opens/close when ligand binds (neurotransmitters: glutamate, gaba, ach) excitatory neurotransmitters cause depolarization of the membrane which will in turn activate voltage gated channels, phosphorylation gating, voltage gating, stretch or pressure gating: involved mechanosensory action. How to measure the action of a single ion channel? (recordings) Record from the channel: place an electrode on surface of muscle to capture one of the channels present.
