Phasic firing: burst of activity that is not as high in freq. but they last longer than ot neurons-- can last 30s. Separated by period of silence around 30s long. 10: different patterns of activity depending on the state of the animal: (hydrated, over-hydrated or hypo- hydrated) Irregular firing- mean firing rate of about 1hz. Phasic firing- inside burst-7hz but 3 hz in average of all burst. 11: look at firing pattern of cells by exposing the animal to different hydration protocols. They recorded simultaneously from 6 diff neurons in a normally hydrated rat. General pattern of activity but when the rat is subjected to 18 hours dehydration the activity level of the vp neurons seem to change to the phasic firing pattern. As u increase the dehydration period the ave. firing rate of the vp neuron increase. Also the % of neurons present each type of firing pattern:
