PHGY 209 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Hematocrit, Subcutaneous Tissue, Transcellular Fluid
Document Summary
Lecture 2: the individual cells have their own environment which is very different from the external environment. This internal environment remains relatively constant: the internal environment comprised the various body fluids. The aspects of body fluids are: how much body fluids we have, the distribution within the body, the characteristics- physical and chemical properties, function. We have to look at the composition of the various tissues and their water content. Skin, muscle, heart liver brain kidney, but these do not make much difference. The two tissues that make the huge difference are bone and fat (adipose tissue)! These make the variations in % body water. If an individual has more fat, more body mass, the % of water will be lower. Estrogen promotes the deposition of fat under the skin, so females have a decrease in % body water than males. As women age, we become progressively drier and the decrease from males if.
