PHAR 301 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Peptic Ulcer, Prokinetic Agent, Proton-Pump Inhibitor
Document Summary
Treatment of ulcers: proton pump inhibitors, h2 receptor-blockers, antacids. How do we protect ourselves from the proteases that will cause damage to us: the stomach is covered in a protective mucosal layer; this is the layer which gets damaged. Prokinetic drugs make our bowels move: when there is damage to the musculature of the stomach, prokinetic drugs cause a reaction to this. Stores, digests, and absorbs nutrients: eliminates waste. Is regulated by: enteric nervous system, cns, gi hormones. Gastric ulcers: acid secretion normal, mucosal defect. The symptom of ulcers is acidic damage to the stomach so the strategy is to reduce acid; we must know the mechanism by which acid is secreted into the stomach. Acid is pumped into the stomach against the osmotic gradient by a pump which requires. There is a group of drugs that can inactivate this drug and resolve the problem. Food and the nervous system highly regulates the cell.
