PHAR 300 Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Arsenic, Malathion, Exposure Assessment
Document Summary
Introduction: mycotoxins: produced by fungi, phytotoxins: produced by plants, biological toxins come from plants and animals and are used mainly to defend themselves from being eaten and to attack predators. Environmental toxicology: air pollution, the size of the particles in the air that you breathe matters . The smaller the particle, the further it will get into your lungs. Visible particles will get filtered out by the hair in the nose. Smaller particles get trapped in the mucociliary blanket and are removed. Even smaller particles may reach distal alveoli and get absorbed. I. e. , ethanol acute toxicity = cns depression, chronic toxicity = liver cirrhosis. I. e. , arsenic acute toxicity = gi damage, chronic toxicity = skin/liver cancer: must consider effects on fertility and teratogenic effects. Noael: highest data point at which there was not an observed toxic or adverse effect. Loael: lowest data point at which there was an observed toxic or adverse effect: sometimes, the curve changes its shape.
