Document Summary
Primary cause of cancer death in the developed world, but it is not the most common cancer. The number of deaths caused by lung cancer is higher than the combined number of deaths for the next 3 most common types of cancer. Lung cancer is responsible for 1/3 of smoking deaths. The relative survival rate 10 years after diagnosis is extremely low compared to prostate, breast and colorectal cancer. Smoking is highly correlated to smoking rates. Deaths from lung cancer in canadian women is levelling off, but it is still high compared to other types of cancer. Dysplasia worsens until you develop anaplasia/carcinoma in situ. There are different types of lung cancer depending on the cell of origin: squamous cell, small cell (oat cell), large cell (undifferentiated), adenocarcinoma. Often, it is just divided into either small cell or non-small cell because the treatment is different: non-small cell carcinoma are the majority of lung cancers.
