All tunes can have a strong rhythmic pulse/movement, but there are many different ways of doing this. Swing feel is divided into 3 (as discussed last class) However, the feel of swing changed over time. Used to be heavy on 1 and 3 of beat (basically duple time) By charlie parker"s ti(cid:373)e: (cid:271)e(cid:272)a(cid:373)e (cid:373)ore fluid a(cid:374)d flowi(cid:374)g. Nowadays, the original new orleans style is not heard much anymore (has not retained its popularity) Contemporary jazz musician still influenced by players like john coltrane. Bass player will fill in, embellish bass line (instead of playing just straight quarter notes) Sometimes other instruments will answer the soloist in a call and response; bass player doesn"t usually. Drums plays 2 and 4 with hi-hat, 1 and 3 with kick and sometimes snare plays the swing eighths.
