These molds have a very restrictive diet keratin (found in hair, nails and skin) Incidence is increasing: found in adults, genetic predisposition, treatment is topical antifungals or terbinafine. Tinea corporis ringworm: most common forms to cause the condition are rubrum and mentagrophytes, treatment = topical azoles. In order to diagnose infection by a dermatophyte, you must scrape the site of infection and treat the scraping with potassium hydroxide. Doing so will dissolve the human cells and only the dermatophytes will remain (they are resistant to koh) Next, use a compound called calcofluor white. It binds to chitin found in the cell wall of the fungus. Can happen to people injured by tornadoes. Interestingly, at the site of injury, there can be a decrease in blood supply: this allows the fungus to evade the immune system.
