Week 3 l4: the science of networks linking formal & informal structures. Linkages between formal (organizational charts) and informal social structures (relationships) They have reciprocal influences on each other joint causation. Some features of formal structures are likely to co-occur with certain patterns of informal structures. Alignment/fit among subsystems is crucial to adapt and survive the external environment. Ex: cole is at the bottom of the formal structure, but at the center of the informal one. Diagrams of social networks make the structure of interaction visible: they are maps of interdependencies. Diagrams allow individuals/orgs to identify existing ties and act strategically to make them more effective. Two principles of social networks formation: self similarity (homophily) & propinquity. Three components of social networks: nodes, ties, interdependencies. Social networks are aggregations of nodes that are tied by some form of interdependencies. Nodes: the actors, usually people or organizations.
