Lecture 19 political opportunity structure and kurdish mobilization in iran: Politics affects how national identity becomes institutionalized and the various forms nationalism may assume. Divided between the borders of turkey, iraq, iran, and syria. Religion: 75% shafiite sunni islam, 25% divided between shiite and muslims (15%: also: alevi, christian, jewish, yezidi, and ahl-i-haqq faiths, a strong tribal element, mountainous regions, not a homogenous group at all. Strong sense of tribalism; their loyalty would be to the tribe and to the chief of the tribe. What is ethnicity: based on contingent rather than constitutive aspects, socially constructed; Ethno-nationalism: politicization of ethnicity: political opportunity, shaped by nation-state building strategies, the positive and negative incentives offered by central governments, the actions and reactions of ethnic groups.
