Document Summary
Hydrocephalus: definition: increased amount of csf in the cranial cavity, classification: classified as primarily relating to either, over-production of csf or impairment of csf absorption (communicating): normal 4th ventricle. On radiographic picture: can see expansion and rounding of lateral ventricles. Intracranial pressure (icp: skull and dura make for a non-expandable compartment. Increase in vol of parenchyma, blood, or csf will increase. Icp: normal icp is ~8mmhg (7-13) when *supine, mild increases up to 15mmhg ~well tolerated, severe increases < 37mmhg ass"c w/ ischemic, > 60mmhg is generally fatal damage, causes of increased icp. Intraparenchymal mass (note that tumors also induce edema in the surrounding brain: generalized brain swelling as a consequence of cerebral edema, elevated venous pressure increased icp, obstruction / impaired absorption of csf, overproduction / expansion of csf compartment. Increase in intracellular fluid secondary to neuronal, glial or endothelial cell membrane injury: can be caused by hypoxic or ischemic insults or intoxication.
