a post-holocaust world. This character represents the best of what western society
can offer but can also be profoundly tainted by the history of the Holocaust. Steiner
not only kills himself but his children, a monstrous thing and yet he is the most
cultivated person in the film.
- Idea that there is nothing to be nostalgic about in the Western European society. We
cannot be nostalgic and question deeply and profoundly the notion of cultural
superiority. The culture that they are cultivating can become a culture of death.
- The place where they are seems empty of human life, this beautiful architecture is
deeply divorced from the natural environment.
- Recording of the thunder is not actually thunder, it is a recording.
- Paparazzi still want to take pictures that they can sell to newspapers but still they are
the human component of this otherwise dead environment. World that has no view of
the future.
- Over intellectualization of Steiner led to a self-indulgence.
- Steiner is the opposite of Sylvia, very controlled appearance, its all about ideas and
intellectual pursuits.
- Steiner represents someone who has the confidence to master every though, can
engage with any ideas. Not at a deeply felt level, not at a sensual level. Everything is
at his disposal.
