Sheriffs peacefully jailed people and then released then. Limited effectiveness of protests by just cycling people. Sncc believed king and the sclc were too conservative. Run as a police state effectively by bull connor. Many in the white population in birmingham rejected connor"s extremism as an embarrassment to the city. Wanted a moderate movement but we generally pro jim crow. Sncc, core, and naacp show up but king and the sclc lead it. Will demonstrate in the downtown area to shut down the city"s businesses community. Picked a specific, pragmatic target to desegregate the downtown shopping area. To agree to allow blacks to shop and to hire blacks. Sclc went around the rotational tactic by bringing in national protestors but mostly high school kids from montgomery and birmingham. Allowed for effective protests while parents could work and continue to work and sustain the community. Connor brings out fire hoses, police dogs, etc which was all broadcast.
