Once the party agrees to a position everyone must fall in line. Loss of confidence in party, though support for socialism remained, universal anti-russian sentiments in east-central europe. Student protests in poland and yugoslavia came to nothing. Hungary an exception, went ahead with reforms and got goulash communism . Broke from ussr on diplomacy with israel as well. As a result, west favors romania, even joins imf.
