North of the danube and east of the rhine The barbarians were not unified: the germanic people transformed but they were not as strong since they were not unified. Barbarians employed within the army would return back home after: they would bring back roman tradition, money Those barbarians closed to roman empire will come to form coalitions with the romans. Alamanni: this is not a new nation. But, they were not as numerous as believed(there were about ~100 000: inhibits modern day switzerland and a bit of germany. They took advantage of roman weakness during the civil war of rome and raided boarder areas. Franks: inhibits the eastern side of the rhine, modern day: north and western germany. Some even raided as far as in spain. Served in the roman army and were not that hostile. Jordanes (6th century) barbarian and secretary: we are unsure if he is goth, wrote getica(written ca. 551 ce).
