Lecture 22 spanish civil war: art and tragedy. The liberal democracy is under attack from the right and from the left, fascism and communism. The aerial bombings are also present in the history of spain. Political discrepancies are huge between the right and left, and they advocate for very different systems, organization and values. We see democrats, communists, anarchists, nationalists, carlists, fascists . For democracies to work you need institutional loyalty where everyone will accept the results and will work for keeping the system or reforming it through political dialogue. Democracies also rely on universal suffrage, the division of power. There was also a huge divide between centralism based in brazil and autonomism/federalism as well as regional independence. The separation of spain into a few provinces/states, this was too much for the centralists and too little for the autonomists. During this period, there is no king, and it is one of the few instances in spain"s history.
