Document Summary

Forest cover change in latin america: tropical forest loss is a major concern. Much of this loss is happening in south america. The map looks at the municipal level of forest loss or forest gain. Red drops indicate where forest has been lost like in areas like brazil, paraguay etc. About half a million square km"s was lost b/w 2001 and 2010. Primarily 55% forest being lost in intact forest. One of the surprising trends in this period over the last 10 15 years is that forests are return to some areas and these are the blue dots. Some is natural recovery and some is forest plantations. These areas of reforestation are very different geographically from where forest has been lost. In all of these countries and regions forests are being lost but in some of these forests are coming back so there is this net gain in places like cuba.
