Food as a resource thousands of different species of plants and a quarter of those are edible. 16 types of plants provide us with food energy and protein. (rice, wheat, etc. ) idea is that most of our food energy and protein comes from plants. What we eat is 0. 005% of what we could eat. We get stuck of consumption of particular types of foods. Importance of agriculture in global economy at least 5 ways. Major component of international trade, major source of national revenue, employment, livelihoods, and environment. International trade/national revenue about a trillion dollars a year. Most important ones wheat, soybeans, etc. (on slides the table). Top produced products are different like rice, milk, indigenous pig meat and chicken meat etc. Employment agriculture engages 1/3 of world"s workers. Important in terms of women high participation of women in agriculture and child labor occurs in agriculture too. Importance of agriculture as a share of gdp.
