Document Summary

The play was described by a critic as both a tragedy and a comedy, a tragedy that pulls you in with horror and a comedy that pushes you away with laughter at the same time. The strangeness of the character hjalmar made the initial production of the play a disaster because the. 19th century audience struggled to understand him as a person, he constantly contradicted himself in the play and was so easily influenced by gregers. A play would change depending on how you stage it. The way a play is staged chooses what aspects of a character to highlight thus forming how the audience would perceive the character. Its a highly realistic play not just in terms of its location but its focus on the working life. There are strong working-class characters, characters who have failed in life, a lot of talk about money, basically projecting people who live in the real world.
