ENGL 311 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Lyrical Ballads, Urban Sprawl
Document Summary
Dissatisfied by poetry written by neoclassical, formal poets. Need poetry more accessible, you can understand the words. Can"t have convoluted, winding words that aren"t as straightforward. Look at folk poetry - effective, tells stories, grabs attention. These ballads aren"t coming out of an oral tradition where we don"t know who first composed it. These lyrical ballads were composed by a poet - a lot more literary devices. Grabbing us and drawing us in through immediate story that"s economical, but it doesn"t just talk about the story. It also talks about sex, culture, etc. And it does it allegorically, or through allusion. Central theme of romanticism is the importance of nature. Square of urban cities, urban sprawl, and people say what"s good for human beings is going out and appreciating nature. Like strong emotions - awe, terror, fear - aesthetic experiences. Being afraid is related to what is beautiful.
