COMP 273 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Instruction Register, Opcode
Document Summary
After break = assembler programming, and more practical programming feel in how to use a pipeline cpu. Next class on wednesday he will give us the project. We have until the end of the semester to do it. But we will start off by imagining that there are many of them. Imagine that each command has a different kind of instruction register. These are three different types of instructions with different corresponding templates of ir. Each command can have its own shape of instruction register. Command are clustered into families , and every family of commands has the same shape of instruction register. We haven"t talked about what this is yet. Each component of the instruction has a binary code associated with it (see pic above). In the case of pipeline cpus, they"re always 32 bits long. Busses on the cpu support a 32 bit bus.
