Greek world is not as popular as rome. Not a rich country in material, agriculture, precious metals. Rough country, landscape with lots of mountains. Civilization of knossos discovered in 1900 by explorer known as the minoan civilization c. 2600-1400 bce reminded him of labyrinth myth (will talk about later) Famous for trade in the bronze age, maritime trade. Had system of writing but have no idea what it means. Women had what looked like more liberty. Bull leaping: jump in front of bulls. Downfall of civilization is from invasions by people outside knossos. Mycenaeans were greatly armed with fortifications outside. Drop in pop. and in urban centers, could be climate change, invasion etc. Know very little about this dark ages . Greece recovered from this and in 800 a new form of state appears in mainland. Eastern half of mediterranean: catastrophe in 1200 bce. Not only urban also included countryside in which most people lived.
