BIOC 212 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Phosphorylation, Urinary System, Morphogen
Document Summary
Adrenal gland: hooked to the kidney but developing independently. Lots can go wrong with this system. When kids void (excrete fluids/pee), urine goes back up ureter and damages kidney: hydroureter - accumulation of urine in ureter, hydronephrosis - accumulation of urine in nephrons. Pro/mesonephros and its central component: the nepthric duct. 3 stages of kidney development: start as pronephros -> then mesonephros -> lastly the metanephros (adult kidney, start at intermediate mesoderm, where kidneys form, first forms a duct. Interesting phenomenon - a parallel to cancer: a model of invasion, cells making their way through tissue to reach bladder. Mesonephros: nephric duct formation then induces the mesonephric tubules form (green tubules in diagram: same as nephrons in adult kidney for filtering things, but not full developed, mesonephros are early kidneys, ex. Frogs stop developing here, but vertebrates need better kidneys. Metanephros: at lower levels like the hind limb, have the bigger nephrogenic/metanephric mesenchyme.
