Prediction involves 2 key components: analysis of measurements (discussed today): analysis of measurements: gathering data, numerical modeling: putting all this data into a computer model and actually coming up with a forecast. Measurements need to be made simultaneously in order to assess the atmosphere at one time -- such measurements are called synoptic". Studies using these measurements are called synoptic meteorology" studies. When we take measurements, we have to take measurements all at the same time so that we can get a snapshot of what"s going on at the weather around the world. Everybody takes measurements at the same time always. Everybody takes measurements on the hours for surface measurements. Everybody launches balloons at the same time and those times are midnight and noon. This is how the weather is coded on a weather map. The actual temperature is 54 and the dewpoint is 54 then our relative humidity is. The number of symbols indicates the intensity of the precipitation.
