African roots: voodoo has come under increased scrutiny, voodoo emphasizes healing, balance and harmony in the world. What is voodoo: voodoo is a healing process, paying respect to ancestors, saints not as ideals they live the spectrum of human virtues and vices, community, not either/or you don"t have to give up religion. Lola"s life: these people live alongside the people who serve them, no haitian has asked brown if she believes in it tension with religion, voodoo and mama lola may challenge certain definitions of religion, e. g. durkheim. Belief": religions call for the practice of one religion or another haitians see no contradiction, don"t refer to spirits as deities, voodoo spirits are larger than life but not other than life. What is religion, anyway: roman and early christian latin: the nouns religio/religiones and the adjective religiosus and the adverb religiose referred primarily to the careful performance of ritual obligations, the term had a technical meaning at the outset.
