Lecture # 4
Ramberg:
How science focuses on sex and gender on the body.
Kinship is a quintessential element for anthropology.
Gender is performative.
o It is not only performative but transactional.
o It changes their labour transactions in the community they can now own land
and pay dowries for their sister’s daughter’s eddig ad support their natal
families.
o It is interesting is that women are married out, but for the devadasis they can
remain in their natal home.
The local provincial governments in India began to outlaw it because they see it as a link
to the sex trade and sex work because they did not have a means to support themselves
(brothel base devadasi).
The problem with outlawing it, it severely impacted the economic family for the Dalit
family (the lowest caste). These untouchables had a means to support themselves.
She brings conversations of kinship and gender as transactional.
She talks about the goddess and that being tied to her is seen as a gift and trouble. As
for the gift she relates back to Mauss. Also, the goddess cures problems like healing
daughters or improving the land. The trouble Yellamma can inflict and the idea of
troubling kinship.
They are talking about the devadasis as a third gender or in between genders.
Butler:
Reproducing using biotechnologies.
A a’s sper, a oa’s egg, ad a third part.
This can cause complications on kinship and relationships.
2 sex system to a 5-sex system:
o Male and female
o Herms: true hermaphrodites
o Merms: male pseudo hermaphrodites
