Document Summary

The problem with the visual system is that it attempts to project a 3d world onto a 2d retina. In order to compensate for this dimensional change, the visual system makes assumptions about the real world and its image is actively constructed by the brain in accordance to these rules/assumptions. The visual system is not a copy paste of the world it important to keep in mind that sensations (like vision) are abstractions of the real world, not replications. Ex: our visual system assumes that light is coming from the top down, therefore, we see objects in the shadows as lighter than those facing the light, when in reality, they"re the same shade. We know the most about the visual system because humans are visual creatures and half of our cortex is taken up by visual processing regions. The eye is like a camera, even if the visual system in its entirety is not.
