Pesticides are designed to kill weeds and fungi
Glyphosate is used to kill weeds by spraying
directly on the weeds
Its use has increased so dramatically because it
is linked to roundup ready produce (soy beans,
corn, cotton, etc.)
It is less toxic than aspirin, caffeine or salt
-
Video 2
Roundup ready technology works
-
Eventually weeds do develop a resistance to roundup
-
Idea is to develop crops that are resistant to other
pesticides
-
Dicamba is a pesticide (herbicide)
If you don't grow a dicamba resistant crop, but
the pesticide drifts onto the crop then it will be
destroyed

2, 4 - D and 2, 4, 5, - T
-
Agent orange was sprayed in Vietnam
Mixture of two herbicides that was used to
defoliate trees to stop people from hiding
under trees
Called agent orange because its band
identifying it was orange
Can give rise to birth deformities and is a
carcinogen
2, 4, D is not linked to any issues it is the one
with T

Video 3
Homeopathic remedies are not useful in any way
-
IARC group 2 A is a probable carcinogen
Based on a hazard analysis, not a risk analysis
Glyphosate has been placed in this
-
IARC classification
Organized into 4 groups
Caprolactam used to make a type of nylon is
the only thing placed in group 4 which is
probably not carcinogenic
-
Risk = hazard x exposure
Sunlight is hazardous because it can cause skin
cancer, but we need to protect ourselves from
sunlight and reduce the risk
-
Hot beverages is placed in group 2A (probably
carcinogen) and red meat as well as baked goods
(acrylamide in baking) and profession of hair dresser
Tea increases risk in esophageal cancer
-
Bacon is in group 1, an established carcinogen
In people who consume a large amount of
bacon, there is a large occurrence of bowel
cancer
-
Activity 2
What does it mean if a product is classified as
probably carcinogenic?
The product in large doses, in some test
animals, under some conditions can cause
cancer
-
Video 4
We can measure the amount of glyphosate produced
in urine
-
Acceptable daily intake is 0.5mg/kg body weight
Would produce 4mg/L of urine per day
People produce 1 - 3 micrograms/L
-
Proposition 65: known as the Safe Drinking Water and
Toxic enforcement act of 1986 states that any
substance that in any dose in any animal can cause
cancer should be subject of a warning to the general
public
-
Activity 3
How is glyphosate exposure measured in the human
body?
Urine analysis
-
What California law requires warnings that
glyphosates cause cancer be posted even though
most global food safety and health agencies are not
issuing the same warning?
Proposition 65: known as the Safe Drinking
Water and Toxic enforcement act of 1986
states that any substance that in any dose in
any animal can cause cancer should be subject
of a warning to the general public

Dr. Stephanie Seneff
Says that GMOs are linked to basically every
disease that you can think of
-
Anthony Samsel
Claims that vaccination is dangerous because
vaccines can have residue of roundup in them
-
GMO wheat can be used to make celiac friendly bread
-
Corn could be enhanced with methionine
Animals don’t get enough nutrients because
there is not enough methionine
-
Activity 4
What is the name of the agricultural practice that MIT
Prof Stephanie Seneff claims leaves glyphosate
residue in wheat that causes people to think that they
have celiac disease or gluten sensitive
Pre-harvest wheat desiccation
-
What is the benefit associate with GMO corn that is
enhanced with the amino acid methionine?
It reduces the amount of food additives needed
for animal feed
-
Video 6
GM technology adoption has reduced chemical
pesticide use by 37%, increased crop yields by 22%
and increased farmers' profits by 68%
