Speciation is a process: a barrier is established, the two populations diverge genetically but are still reproductively compatible, reproductive incompatibility is established. Various mechanisms of speciation: uniform natural selection, divergent natural selection (ecological selection, genetic drift, polyploidy, hybridization, sexual selection, cytoplasmic incompatibility. Ecological speciation: disruptive/divergent selection drives adaptive divergence, reproductive isolation evolves as a consequence.
