Document Summary

Biol 111 lecture 15 arthropods ii: metamorphosis hormones; introducing the. Lecture date/time: oct 29th, 2015 / 10:35-11:25 am. Hormones are chemical messengers secreted by endocrine cells. (endocrine system is different than nervous system b/c ns uses neurotransmitters and electrical signals, doesn"t travel in blood uses neurons) They are distributed by the blood and bind to target cell receptors (target specificity depends on receptor equipment of cells) Typical endocrine pathway: something that drives the cells to release the hormone, that then goes into the bloodstream and acts on an effector cell. Once the response is accomplished, there is a feedback so that the secretory cells stop sending out the hormone. There is also multi-level integration in the ns/es (ex. hypothalamus pituitary peripheral hormone glands) Hormones act by affecting the expression of a gene, altering the activity of an existing enzyme, or changing permeability of a cell membrane for ions (this is related to nerve cells)
