Document Summary
Lecture 7: transport and mineral nutrition in plants. Plants need to acquire organic and inorganic materials. Organic material c, h, o are obtained from atmosphere and water. Inorganic materials such as chemical nutrients are obtained from soil along with water. The processes of acquisition and distribution of materials involve transport of materials. Carried out the first experiment in plant history. Grew a small plant to a much bigger plant in a known quantity of soil. While the plant grew more than 1000 times, weight of the soil did not increase. He concluded that the plant did not take anything from the soil. It just needed the soil to fit it for standing upright. Wrong: aristotle"s balance was not well settled. Plants do need things from the soil. Transport by bulk flow: driven by pressure difference between the 2 ends. Diffusion: due to thermal energy of molecules. Involves no applied force, concentration gradient provides the direction.
