Emile durkheim: was born in 1858 in france. His father and his grandfather and great-grandfather were rabbis. He began to study and become scholarly rather than become a rabbi as his family did before. Went out of his way to say sociology is a distinct science from all other kinds of sciences: one of the founding fathers of sociology. In 1902 he obtained a position in a premier academic university in france and he began to publish the first sociological journal: l"ann e sociologique. Was around colleagues/students who were also dedicated to the sociological journal which had the first edition appear in 1898: he was founding a discipline, 1850-1900 period in europe had a tremendous growth in the sciences. Most academic disciplines were first introduced and developed. Prior to the period, the disciplines would have been philosophy, some political economy (that marx did), theology. Psychology and anthropology along with political science emerged as a field.
