Soci 100 class notes april 3, 2018. Drop in the number of marriages in the last 50 years and drop in children born. Increases in common-law marriages, divorce, single-parents and same-sex couples. Traditional families are the gold standard for childbearing. Without this setup children are more likely to end up less happy or fulfilled. The bedrock of society, the family keeps society together. Social problems are increasing as the traditional family disappears. Family decline perspective is based on illusion and the traditional families are restrictive. People choosing to have children will better raise their children. Less structure in the family situation is a good thing. Family diversity = more freedom, fewer problems. Decline of the traditional family is, overall a good thing for society. A third perspective: past; fp idealizes the future. Stephanie coontz fd and fp both oversimplify complicated family dynamics. The poorer you are, the less healthy you"re likely to be.
