HIST-308 Lecture Notes - Lecture 25: Petrarch
Document Summary
Petrarch was a liminal figure between scholastic and humanist. More so a humanist than anything else: henry iv. He didn"t attack the french: henry v. France was ruled by charles vi the mad at the time. He even attacked his own soldiers and subjects. Groups of french nobles conspired to find a new line of french kings: armagnac and burgundy. The french civil war broke along urban rural boundaries. Henry"s plan was to use these intra-french divisions to the favour of england. In 1415, he allied with the house of burgundy. He invaded france anew: battle of agincourt. Henry led 6000 english soldiers to victory over 20,000. Henry struck a treaty with charles vi in 1420. He made him heir to the french throne. Henry and charles" agreement took the form of a marriage alliance. By marrying his daughter, henry v intertwined france and england"s fates: 1422. Both charles vi and henry v died in the same year.
