HIST-308 Lecture Notes - Lecture 42: Neoplatonism, Babylonian Captivity, Fraticelli
Document Summary
These ideas were picked up by another franciscan. Defended the idea of god"s absolute unconstrained power. Placed god"s ordained power by which god freely limited divine power. Absolutely, god did not have to forgive anyone via penance. But god limited god"s power by willing to forgive anyone via penance: natural science. Absolutely, god could cause a rock to fall up to the sky. God has to freely limit god"s power so that rocks fall downward. Scotus was a platonic realist about universal categories. Abelard implied nominalism might threaten the neoplatonic hierarchy. Came from augustine to aquinas: ockham"s razor. Cuts away the layers of being between god and the rest of existence. Simple version was that we shouldn"t multiply levels of explanation too much. But ordained power has ordered the cosmos in a logical way. Ockham"s god has no need of forms or ideas or universals in between. He called for thinkers to begin with individually existing entities.
