For teresa the 3 active levels must give way to the 4 higher levels of passive or infused contemplation. At these levels again, divine activity steps in to lead the way. At the 4th level, the prayer of quiet, god quiets the soul"s urge to be active. God grants the soul mystical union with the divine. It gives divine properties to the undeserving human. For teresa this meant experiences of divine ecstasy and messages from god. At this point the soul has realizes that at its core there is nothing left but the trinity itself. Via this spiritual marriage, the soul itself disappears into the essence of its groom: mystical background. From bernard to meister eckhart, medieval mystics laid out the steps toward attaining and the overcoming of the self: comparison to the reformers. But in the 16th century, teresa"s words took on a new meaning.
