The tridentine eucharist officially confirmed that the real presence of christ in the sacrament occurred via transubstantiation. Certainly of zwingli, anti-presence: penance and unction. The council of trent also reconfirmed the necessity of penance and extreme unction. Grace couldn"t be communicated to the faithful in the absence of any penitence whatsoever. The sick and dying still needed grace at the very end: tridentine interregnum. After issuing these decisions, the council of trent paused again for most of the 1550s. Pope paul iv was distracted by his anti-spanish campaigns. He was not the biggest fan of trent: the final session. In 1562, pius iv reconvened trent one last time in order to settle the remaining issues. The centrality of the mass: against iconoclasm. Against the iconoclasm of karlstadt and many of the swiss reformers, trent decided in favour of icons and iconodoulism. It reaffirmed the conciliar decrees of the later ecrumenical councils. It was held in common by latins and greeks.
