Document Summary

In addition to the cardinals, luther also waged a war of words against a number of fellow anti- institutional reformers. They adapted the bravado of his assurance to their own uses. They came up with ideas that he himself would never accept. It was all well and good to decry popes but there would need to be someone else in charge. Luther also sought to liberate christians from 4 of the 7 sacraments. He offered an ambiguous take on the future of penance: holy matrimony. Matrimony was reduced by many reformers to a civil matter. Salvation had little to do with your church decreed marital status. Luther and many other formerly celibate reformers soon took wives. Ordination or holy orders was downgraded in view of luther"s idea of the universal priesthood. The entire notion of a clerical class tossed out the window. All christians stood on the same plane of election: confirmation and last rites.
