The reformers were protesting a crackdown on religious liberties within the empire. The term protestantism makes sense mostly within the context of the hre. Reformer remains the more holistic term: diet of ausburg. The next year in 1530, melancthon was again present at the diet of ausburg. There he delivered the ausburg confession summing up the basics of reformation thought for popular consumption yet one more time: schmalkaldic league. In 1531, the violent effects of the reformation became clear with the birth of this league. It was an alliance between the elector of saxony and the landgraf of hesse. Lest they be attacked by the catholic hre: schmalkaldic war. Ultimately the schmalkaldic alliance would lead to the brief schmalkaldic war. Melanchthon for his part tried to steer clear of conflict. Instead aiming to work for peace with like-minded catholics across the aisle: 1546.
