Then invoked augustine against schism: the cardinals. From an early stage, luther was confronted by a series of theologically trained cardinals. We"ve already mentioned tommaso da vio, aka cardinal cajetan who debated luther back in: cardinal contarini. He was present at luther"s diet of worms in 1521. Contarini largely sympathized with luther"s complaints about clerical abuses and even his theology of grace: his contribution. As the 16th century progressed, contarini would be a leader of the pro-reform movement within the institution of the catholic church. He was still hoping to welcome them back in: contarini"s limits. He saw as a sign of pride, not augustinian humility. For contarini, one could still maintain a doctrine of augustinian grace from within the church itself. Schism was too much: humility in community. Following contarini"s logic, augustine lays out both the gift of grace and the need for humility in the face of our uncertain fates.
