Document Summary

The ruler of saxony had forbidden tetzel from selling indulgences in his lands. That was the elector frederick iii, the wise. He would go on to become luther"s greatest political protector: elector frederick. He was an elector because he had a vote in deciding who would become the next hre. This was an important position to have in the complex world of the hre. He did like the medici sponsor artists and intelelctuals. He also supported the work of luther and his friend melanchthon. Frederick may have had his political reasons for supporting luther later on. He was probably impressed by luther"s early support of his policies. Tetzel preached near wittenberg and luther took action: the 95 theses. In october of 1517, luther published the 95 thesis against tetzel"s indulgences. He nailed them to the door of the church. The theological content of the theses was mostly focused on the technical problems of the popular notion of indulgences.
