Document Summary

Speak through prophets (and the councils: sacramental theology (one baptism only, ana-baptists). Via apostolic succession (paul/peter): council of ephesus. In 431, the council of ephesus further defined mary as the "god-bearer". In defiance, nestorian christians mostly centered in antioch, broke away and sent missions further east (china): council of chalcedon. In 451, the council of chalcedon defined the incarnation of christ as a hypostatic union. That is christ, the second hypostasis of the trinity, consists of a union of two natures: one human, one divine: monophysite christianity. In response, many christians broke away, especially many copts centered in. These mono or miaphysites argued that christ"s two natures fused into one nature rather than staying distinct: alternative christianities. Still other christian groups moved even further away from these ecumenical conciliar ideas. Manichaeans for example, venerated christ as a divine messenger of light, fighting against an evil body of darkness: ecumenical consensus.
